Professor Sophie Gilliat-Ray is a leading voice in the study of Muslims in Britain. She is Professor of Religious and Theological Studies and Founding Director of the Centre for the Study of Islam in the UK at Cardiff University. Sophie has dedicated her career to understanding the social, religious, and cultural dynamics of Muslim communities. Her research explores how British Muslims integrate their faith into their daily lives, examining the roles of family, community, and religious institutions. Professor Gilliat-Ray’s extensive work on religious leadership and chaplaincy also sheds light on the support systems available to Muslim families within public institutions. She is a Fellow of the British Academy (FBA), a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales (FLSW), and was awarded an OBE for her services to Education and Muslim Communities in Britain in 2020. These accolades highlight the impact of her scholarship and her commitment to fostering understanding between Muslim communities and wider society. Her publications, including her book Muslims in Britain: An Introduction (2010), and Muslim Childhood (with Prof. Scourfield et al., 2013), offer invaluable resources for parents seeking to raise confident, faith-filled children. Professor Gilliat-Ray’s work provides a strong foundation for understanding the unique context of Muslim families in Britain.
